It's day 25! The last month, and the last 100 years for that matter, have flown by! They've gone so fast, we thought you might appreciate another recap. Excerpts from weeks two & three are below. Check them out and then meet us in the Plaza! The shows still start at 5:30pm and end at 7:00pm. Bring some pizza, bring some ice cream, but be sure to bring yourself! Only five more chances! Also, only one last chance for a group ride. This Wednesday marks the last day where you can join our favorite
Lycra-clad men on an adventure around Davis. Grab your wheels and your helmet and meet them at 10am in the E Street Plaza. To the Century!
Day 8
Gregg:
Tonight is Critical Mass. A night when cyclists come together and take to the streets – they meet people, they have a good time, they celebrate the bicycle. They do it for one night every month.
One night? That’s rubbish – you take to the streets for the 30 nights a month, anyone can do it for one night – do it for 30 nights – that’s a critical mass, that’s something to think about – come on Critical Mass try harder!
Gary:
To the streets – let’s ride together
To the streets – leave the car at home
To the streets – can we ride through the drive-thru burger place I’m starving!
Day 9
Gregg:
We stuck around the farmer’s market for quite a wile. We got talking to another couple –they had a stall, they had all sorts of information and leaflets and posters on the stall, all about local issues. They told us they were promoting ‘A better way of life’.
They looked at us, in our matching gear, and our small bikes and they said ‘what are you two promoting?’ And before we had a chance to answer they said ‘the circus?’ Which we thought was an easy mistake to make.
Gary:
To a better way of life
To a happier way of life
To sticking it to the old way of life
Gregg:
Let’s stick it to the old way of life and then let’s stick it to the new way of life
To a better life - Let’s stick it to animals
To a better life - Let’s stick to the vegetables
To a better life - Let’s stick to the minerals
To a better life - Let’s stick to Gary’s leg
Gary:
I’ve got something to add about my leg. When we arrived in Davis and started riding I had quite a bad pain in my leg, perhaps around the knee. It really hurt to ride. I did some stretches but it didn’t seem to help.
The funny thing is ever since we were on Barbara Place and the young woman touched my leg the pain has gone, it’s completely gone. It don’t know if the two things are connected but I thought it was worth telling you about.
(To Gregg) carry on.
Gregg:
To my leg – I’ve got pain as well you know
To my leg – my leg’s got feelings too
To my leg – I want a better leg
Day 10
Gregg:
Ladies and gentlemen here they are, they’ve made it, they’re here!
It’s Sunday night, it’s the 10th day - THEY’VE MADE DOUBLE FIGURES - you didn’t think they’d make it, but here they are, look at them, look at them - look at their little legs, look at their little fingers, listen to their funny little accents. You called and they came – and now here they are – look at them!
It’s Sunday a day of rest – a day of rest for who? Who’s been resting – they haven’t, there’s no time to rest – there’s no time for a late brunch, there’s no time to watch the game, there’s no time to have a cold one, there’s no time, there’s no time, there’s only time for this, this sleeping and then, this – there’s only this – this is all you’ll ever need.
Ladies and gentlemen, build it and they will come. You built a plaza on E street, you covered it in cobbles, you woke up on this Sunday morning, you looked out of your window, you saw two grown men on small folding bicycles and you said to yourself ‘today is the day of our lord, do they know no respect?’ Of course they know respect – they respect the plaza, they respect the cobbles, they respect the crying clock – look at it crying away.
It’s happening again, right before you’re eyes. Don’t blink, don’t sneeze!
Ladies and Gentlemen the time has come, it’s 6.15, it’s the E Street Plaza, you’re here and they’re here.
Ladies and Gentlemen, for the 10th time – THEY’VE MADE IT TO DOUBLE FIGURES - after 3, 1,2, 3 – To The Century!
Day 11
Gregg:
The bottle pointed back to the north – back to Woodland – straight into the wind, a living nightmare. We headed out of town on F – and as we were going along we saw the park, Davis Community Park – and we took a group decision to sit for a while in the park, to find a spot out of the wind and to shelter, just for a couple of minutes. We hadn’t been going long – we’d only just started – but we rode onto the park. I immediately saw a young boy – he’s maybe 3 or so – in a stroller, a pram, being pushed around by what I guess was his mum. The thing is he had an ice cream – he was sitting in his pram holding this great big ice cream. This boy had really got it all sorted out. He’s on wheels – but the clever part – is that somebody is pushing him, somebody else is doing all the work. No headwind for him, no sore legs for him, nobody shouting at him from passing cars. He’s got it sorted.
I looked at the boy and his great big ice cream and I said to Gary – ‘I wish, more than anything, that I was him’
To letting somebody else do the hard work
To an ice cream in the sun
To cookies and cream, to mint-choc chip, to vanilla and strawberry – to anything in a tub, I’m not fussy.
Day 12
Gregg:
To laughing off the pain
To laughing off the aches
To laughing off the burning lungs
To laughing off the gears – we’ve only got six
To laughing off the wheels – we’ve only got two
To laughing off the days – we’ve only done twelve
To laughing off the miles - it’s about 25 a day - haven’t you heard of kilometres? They’re better, they’re shorter
Gary:
To laughing in the fields
To laughing in the towns
To laughing in coffee shops
To laughing in the changing rooms
To laughing in the Sushi Buffet
To laughing in the Thai Bistro
To laughing in Wells Fargo
To laughing in the Social Security Administration
Gregg:
While we were in West Sacramento we went to the Social Security Administration – the IRS suggested we go - we’ve got to apply for social security numbers so we can file a tax return.
We found the office, we folded up the bikes, we went inside, we took a little number from the deli-machine thing and waited with all the people. Finally our number was called, we went up to the booth, there was a window and behind it some wooden shutters, the shutters opened and there was a man sitting there he looked at us and said ‘Oh, you’re from Davis’. We said we’re not from Davis, where from England, in fact that’s why we’re here.
He told us he’d been to England many times, he liked a pint in the pub and to play darts in the pub – a great choice. He said he had a great time every time he went. He said ‘Are you guys having a good time over here?’ and we had to admit that yes, yes we were having a good time.
He sorted out the application for us and told us we should have the cards in a couple of weeks. We asked him, as a joke really, if having Social Security numbers gave us any rights in the US – He said ‘Well, it gives you the right to have it stolen – but that’s about it’
Day 13
Gregg:
The bottle finally pointed west and our first chance to ride out to Winters. Jerry and Sam came with us – you probably know Jerry, her and her husband Pete ride the crazy bikes – they’re the Davis Whym-cycle Society. On the way out of town Jerry took us to her house, to see their bikes – they’ve got hundreds of the things, big ones, small ones, one’s that go in two different directions at once, ones for land, ones for water. You’ll see them in the Picnic Day parade. Jerry said ‘People around here think me and Pete are a bit crazy’ and I said ‘It’s the same with us, people think Gary’s a bit crazy’.
Day 14
Gregg:
We headed back to Dixon – we went out through the campus. It was great – people carrying books around, people having discussions about things they’ve read in books, some people just sat reading books. It’s very book-based – it’s great. We started talking to a guy who had his head in a book – we asked him what he was studying he said – ‘I’m looking at how seed dispersal is effected by severe climatic conditions, such as draught, or heavy winds’ and we said – ‘We’ll if you want to know about wind, we can help – we’ve got some great wind stories’
I think he thought we were students because then he asked us what we were studying – and because Gary was in a good mood, Gary likes a campus – he replied and said ‘everything!’
To seed dispersal – I like how they blow in the wind
To seed dispersal – I like how float in the rivers
To seed dispersal – I like how they fall into the cracks in the ground
To seed dispersal – I like how they get in through your window
To seed dispersal – I like how they get under your bed
To seed dispersal – I like how they get in your bed
To seed dispersal - I like everything about seeds
Day 15
Gregg:
To the first half – what a great first half
To the second half – where’s the interval?
To the interval – I want an interval
Gary:
You can’t have one - you win some you lose some
To the first half - it’s flown by
To the first half – I haven’t enjoyed myself this much for ages
To the first half – the second half can’t be better than the first half surely?
To the first half – it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s got songs, it’s got seeds, it’s got everything
To the first half – let’s take it to Broadway
To the first half – let’s give it a HBO special
To the first half – let’s mount it, frame it and stick it in the Cycling Hall of Fame

Day 18
Gregg:
The funny thing is – we saw the man again, a few hours later – he was up on 3rd - the guy with the same bike as ours.
Gary saw him first – and got pretty excited again – he called out to him, but the guy didn’t hear.
I saw that he had one of those little ear-pieces in – for his phone. I explained to Gary that he was probably on a call and didn’t hear him and Gary said – ‘Yes, he’s probably in a meeting”
To ‘I can’t talk to you now I’m in a meeting
To ‘I can’t chat away to you all day – I’m in a meeting’

Day 19
Gregg
We woke up today to clouds – brilliant – a break from the sun, at long last it felt like home, like England, very familiar – and then it started raining, perfect.
Day 20
Gregg:
It’s the 20th night, everybody loves it – everybody says what a good idea it is – it’s catching on – Safeway have started selling starter kits – you get two little bikes, two matching shirts, a couple of helmets, two clipboards and a big map – they’re throwing in the script for the first night for free – it’s a bundle!
